Radish, Cuttlefish and Spareribs form a Wholesome Threesome Soup
Chinese radish, also called “daikon”, looks like a white carrot. Combined with dried cuttlefish, red dates and pork spareribs, an easy soup can be prepared. The cuttlefish and red dates add lots of flavor to the soup. Cuttlefish has an intense flavor, so use sparingly if this is your first attempt at making this soup.
Ingredients (Serves 2)
- 1 medium sized radish
- 4-5 pcs small dried cuttlefish
- 1 lb pork spareribs
- 10 red dates
- 5 cups water
- salt
- white pepper
Method:
1. Wash and peel radish and cut into pieces. Soak dried cuttlefish in a bowl of warm water. When softened, remove the soft bone. Rinse red dates.
2. Blanch pork spareribs in boiling water to remove the smell and skum.
3. Bring water to a boil. Add radish, dried cuttlefish, spareribs and red dates. Bring to a boil, then cook over medium heat for 30 minutes.
4. Simmer for another 30 minutes or until radish softens. Add salt and pepper to taste.
5. Serve with steamed white rice.
Radish, cuttlefish and spareribs…. they are meant to be together…! Don’t be blah!

How do you have time to cook every day? It’s not just the cooking, there’s also the grocery buying and the prep, right?

Erm… I am now the Domestic Director of the house, so it’s my job to cook? :) I have a major supermarketing day each week and all the packaging of the meat portions and washing of the vegetables are done on that day. That makes the rest of the week easier as it’d then be just defrosting the meat and putting the ingredients together. This was part of the job description. :)

That’s the hard part for me. Planning things. When I finally have time to do my share of the cooking, there’s nothing for me to cook…except stuff from boxes.

I used to be working from home. Sometimes I ate the same thing for lunch and dinner so that I only cook once that day.
Soup would be an easy start for you. I’d blog about some tips soon.

No, not soup. I don’t know why, but Asian soups make my stomach quesy. I don’t like seafood either. Yes, I’m sure I am Chinese. My wife asks me that a lot. She tells me I look Chinese, but I’m not.
