Prima Taste Premixes - For The Homesick Singaporean
I swear by Prima Taste Premix. When I first patronised Prima Taste USA Restaurant, I even asked them if they sold the premixes. Unfortunately they do not. Well, it’s no wonder, because based on the reviews in yelp.com, the dishes served there are just so-so. If they had sold the pre-mixes, I think they have to close down. Ok. I am being mean.
But not all is lost! I found a website which sells the Prima Taste premixes. It’s H.C. Foods Co Ltd. The only catch is the cost. It’s now in USD instead of SGD of course.
We recently had a Singapore friend come to the Bay Area for a business meeting and we had him bring over our favorite Prima Taste premixes: Hainanese Chicken Rice, Hokkien Mee, Mee Siam and Mee Rebus. There were some other premixes available but these are my favorites so far.
I also saw rave reviews on the Singapore Chilli Crab Prima Taste premix. Yes. The next Singaporean friend visiting is going to bring that over!
Bite This!

Are you thinking of cooking chilli crab with that ? I wanted to, but procrastinated for so long because I can’t handle live crabs :( I think the crab premix will go well with some pasta dishes-tasted back in some cafes in S’pore before.

I am not sure if I can used pre-cooked crabs. Someone told me I could find pre-cooked dungeoness crabs in Safeway.

[…] For this Hainanese Chicken Rice, of course I had help from my favorite Prima Taste premix. The first time I made this, I used a small whole chicken. I decided that it was too tedious to cut the chicken into its parts. Besides, I am not too keen on breast meat, although that is supposed to be the healthier part of the chicken. The packet instructions also said to simmer the chicken in the stock for half an hour. Because the stock is made from a packet of Prima Paste, it kind of discolored the chicken meat and the end result was that the chicken meat did not look whitish, like what you find in authentic Hainanese Chicken Rice. Not only Singaporeans like it. I was travelling to Sydney once and was bunking at friends condo there. All they wanted was Prima Taste Premixes. haha..
I carried over 20 boxes of different combinations in! Yes, Aust had strict customs, they were looking at every single box when I declared it. LOL…

Wow you actually declared them to customs! I thought these were OK to bring in because they were non-meat products.

Hi Winnie, sorry for the late reply. I am still catching up on my emails. Thanks for the simple recipe above (you forgot the mung bean sprouts) :) Using shrimp broth is a good idea - I make that from the shrimp heads and shells. For sambal chili, I have Glory brand (bought from Ranch 99). It’s pretty good. I currently have one pkt of Prima Taste Hokkien Prawn Mee left. Will use that first before using your recipe :)
